Every year we complain about the quality of television at Christmas (as I spend my Christmases in the UK, I’m referring to British TV). There is a lot of trash on. Then there are good programmes, classics even, like ET and The Great Escape, but when they’ve been shown umpteen Christmases in a row, the novelty wears off.
However, in 1999 we were treated to one of the best pieces of Christmas TV ever: The Flint Street Nativity. I won’t spoil it for you by telling the plot, but basically some of the best British comedians play the role of schoolchildren doing their nativity play. When I saw it I wished I had recorded it, but I thought, never mind, it will be repeated another Christmas. But, alas, to my knowledge it was never repeated.
I’ve looked through the programmes on this Christmas, and yet again there’s no sign of this programme. So, I’ve decided to buy it. £5 from HMV online. An absolute bargain.
If you like British comedy, you have to see this. Just let me know and I’ll lend you it. Obviously they’ll be no Spanish or Catalan subtitles. But then, if you’re reading this your English is probably pretty decent.
