Sinbad the Sailor

Last night I went to see this year’s pantomime at York Theatre Royal, and once again I was not disappointed. While across town at the Opera House they have once again brought in celebrities and fading celebrities, the Theatre Royal has stuck with its usual cast, led by the magnificent Berwick Kaler, who is back for the 29th time!

If I had to describe Berwick Kaler’s pantomimes in one word, that word would have to be “fun”. And it’s fun for all ages. I enjoy it as much now as I did when I was 7 years old.

I should make a special mention of this year’s new actress. Though we missed good old Suzi Cooper, who has taken a year off to have a child, we got the stunningly beautiful (especially in her Wild Dances outfit) Julie-Anna Castro, who was a fantastic all-round actress. I’m sure Suzi Cooper will be back next year, but please Berwick, bring back Julie-Anna again!

Anyway, there’s still time to see this year’s pantomime. It’s on until 2 February. If you can’t make it this year, remember that next year’s tickets will go on sale in March!
