I originally published the following article in November 2007:
All these names have been used by a single translation agency, run by Juan Fernando Valls Fusté, who has also used the names Joan Valls and Joan Fusté. Further, somebody signing as Juan Chover has sent advertised using a mobile telephone number that is also used by Maremagnum. This is a translation agency that has been ripping off translators for years. How do they do it? Well, it’s quite simple. They take on a job, subcontract it to a translator, send the completed translation to the end client, get paid for the translation, but then don’t pay the translator!
They have been taken to court several times, and lost, yet they still go about their business. There has got to be something wrong with the justice system if the company can go on persistently doing this and getting away with it. In my opinion, this activity is criminal. In many cases, they are playing with the livelihood of translators. Many people have worked for them when they were just starting out as translators. When I first started freelancing, I was on a very low budget and needed every penny I got. I dread to think of the terrible consequences their actions have had on some translators.
How come they can go on doing this? How come the legal system allows a company to act like this for so long? Surely there has got to be a point where a prison sentence is necessary? It makes me so angry every time I hear of yet another case of them not paying up.

On 20 November 2008, just over a year after I published the article, I received a letter by e-mail from a Jose Prieto Ruiz, who signed as a member of the legal department of Cuatrecases. There is a very well-known legal firm in Barcelona called Cuatrecasas, and not noticing the spelling difference, I assumed it was them. The letter told me my website was being used to “defame a GROUP EMTIEM SCHOOL SA (GRUPO MTM UNIVERSAL) company”. I was told that if I did not contact them within 48 hours, they would report my website to the courts. Naturally I was a little startled. I phoned the telephone number I was given, and although Jose Prieto Ruiz was unavailable, the person on the phone told me that I should remove the article.
I then sent an e-mail to the legal department at the university where I work to ask for advice, and informed the person who had contacted me that I had done so, this time by sending an e-mail to the address from which Jose Prieto Ruiz had written to me.
Curiously, the domain of the e-mail address was not one belonging to Cuatrecases, but contained the name of MTM. This made me rather suspicious, so I decided to look up Cuatrecasas on the Internet and phone them on the number I found. When I asked to speak to Jose Prieto Ruiz, after a short pause while the woman searched on her computer she told me that nobody with this name worked for the company.
Once again I e-mailed the person who wrote to me, this time asking why nobody with that name worked for Cuatrecases. I also informed them of the legal advice I had been given: that the letter should be sent to me by fax or by post.
Meanwhile, a contact I have in Cuatrecasas phoned the number I’d been given, but was told that Jose Prieto Ruiz was not in. He phoned back later, and was told that Mr Prieto Ruiz was in Holland. The next time he was told that he had gone out for a minute. Then finally he was able to speak with him, at which point he was given the same explanation that they gave me shortly later (see next paragraph).
The person replied saying that somebody from “Quatrecases” [sic] had contacted him, and told me that he did not work for this company. His explanation was that the founding member of his company was called Carles Cuatrecases Perez. He also asked me to contact him as soon as possible to sort out the issue and avoid “expensive and unnecessary lawsuits”.
This was sounding even more suspicious now. I couldn’t find any information about Jose Prieto Ruiz or Carles Cuatrecases Perez on the Internet, and found out that neither of the two belonged to the Barcelona bar association or the national register of lawyers.
Since I was out of the country at the time, I told him that I could not phone immediately, but I asked him to tell me which bar association he belonged to, and reiterated my request for the letter to be sent through the post.
Jose Prieto Ruiz wrote back and said that his client had asked him to take necessary measures and that I would shortly receive a letter by certified post from the courts, at which point I would be able to check the necessary details.
Once again I was somewhat concerned, so I removed the article. I informed Jose Prieto Ruiz, but asked him, for the third time, to provide me with the necessary details. I received no reply for the next three days.
After further investigation, I was told that only a registered lawyer could file a lawsuit before the courts. I informed Jose Prieto Ruiz of this and asked him to confirm whether he was a lawyer. One of the reasons why I asked this question is because under Spanish law it is illegal to claim one is a lawyer when one is not (he had only said he was a member of a “legal department”). I also said that if they could not provide me with the information I needed, I would publish the text again.
In reply, he failed to confirm whether he was a lawyer, and simply told me that a lawsuit would be filed if I published the text again.
I wrote back the following: “You have not answered my question. Are you a lawyer? Yes or no? A very simple question”.
I did not get a yes or no answer. I was told he worked for a solicitors firm in which there were “interns (’pasantes’ in the original Spanish), lawyers, economists, accountants, etc”.
Again I wrote back and said the following:
You have still not answered my question. Are YOU a lawyer? If you are not, I need the letter to be signed by one of your lawyers.
You told me your firm is called Cuatrecases. I cannot find this firm anywhere. I need the company’s address.
To help you answer my questions, please answer below:
Is Jose Prieto Ruiz a lawyer? Yes or no?
Answer:If Jose Prieto Ruiz is not a lawyer, one of Cuatrecases’ lawyers is called…

Having not received an answer more than 24 hours later, I sent the following message:
You have still not answered my question. Maybe I have not been explicit enough. I need to found out whether you are who you say you are. All the messages you have sent me have come from a maremagnummtm.com address. The 902 phone number also belonged to Maremagnum. And although you have told me that your company is called Cuatrecases, I have not found this company in any directories or on any website. I therefore need the legal address of your company so I can check. I ask you once again to collaborate with me. If you fail to do so, I will republish my text until I receive a certified fax with the necessary information: the name of a lawyer (since I can check this with the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española) and the address of your company.
I sent this second message on 28 November. At the time of writing (19 December), I have yet to receive a reply from either of the two letters. For this reason I have decided to republish my article, and explain why I have done so. The person who wrote to me signing as Jose Prieto Ruiz has failed to provide me with any evidence that he is a lawyer, or any evidence that the company Cuatrecases exists.

On 23 December somebody with a Maremagnum e-mail address sent me links to forums on which they have announced that I rip off translators by not paying them. On both forums for which they sent me links, over a dozen translators have voiced their support for me, including people with whom I have worked and whom I have paid.
On the same day, no less than 7 comments were sent to my blog, all from the IP address 83.57.189.108. The comments consisted of the same sentence repeated over and over again hundreds of times.

Just realised I forgot to say something. I meant to end my article by saying these people should be in prison. And I’m not joking. I mean it. They are playing with people’s livelihood. Some people have been threatened with a prison sentence for burning some photos of the King; meanwhile the guys at Maremagnum are going back to their luxury houses and cars every night.

As I once said… I worked for and with them. And I saw eeeverything you’re saying. They would go to the office pretty late, with an excellent car, summer all around the world, have a huuuuge house, and most important, not pay the freelance translators. my friend and i had to talk to them and tell them that they would get paid next month, next month, next month, next month… but the time never arrived for them. we had to deal with the postman that had soo many summons for the manager (two persons in one) as well, and most depressing thing: they would charge X money to the client and pay (if so) 0′00000000X to the translator. but as you say, they’re usually beginners and need the money…… i really hope they get caught and que a cada cerdo le llega su san martín!!!!!!

Me da miedo quie exista gente así, porqué los que estamos empezando a buscar empleo en el mercado laboral de la traducción, terminamos siendo víctimas de gentuza parecida. Tu traduces con toda la ilusión del mundo, creyendo que por fin vas a tener tu hueco en el mundo de la traducción y luego….nada, tiempo, dinero y esfuerzos perdidos.
Como tu has dicho, espero que finalmente paguen por sus abusos.

A mi me han estafado, me deben cerca de 800 euros hace 2 meses y medio, solo me pagaron la primera traduccion para confiarme… y despues nada, mi hermano tb esta en esta situacion… pienso denunciarlos dnd haga falta. en internet en prensa, tenemos que unir nuestras fuerzas!!!

Yo soy una de las últimas víctimas de estos tipos, al menos de uno que firmaba sus e-mails como “Carlos Cano” (seguro que hasta el nombre es falso), afortunadamente por poco dinero.
Bueno, yo creo que estas cosas no se pueden dejar pasar, así que voy a guerrear con el problema todo lo que pueda, porque ellos siguen haciendo esto por el cansancio de sus víctimas, como tantos otros casos de abusos.
Así que si alguna de las “víctimas” lee este mensaje y quiere sumarse a la iniciativa, bienvenida sea. Hay que intentar que estos tipos acaben defenestrados.
También me interesa mucho conocer las sentencias previas de los juicios contra esta “empresa”, por favor, si leeis esto algún implicado, ¿podríais pasármela?

Yo vivo en portugal y también fui estafada por Juan Chover hace un par de semanas por 250 euros de una traducción español portugues, él piensa que porque estoy en Portugal no lo demando está muy equivocado… haré la denuncia la semana que viene a la policia con todas las pruebas que he conseguido por internet (nombre verdadero, pagina web, telefono fijo, móvil, etc) voy a luchar hasta la última consecuencia… además de ser traductora también soy abogada asi que no voy a desistir.

Fui contratada hace un par de anos, como traductora fija en esta agencia de traduccion. Mi primer puesto como traductora con toda la ilusion que esto conlleva. A mi tambien me han estafado. No me dieron de alta en la Seguridad Social, problemas por todos lados con las nominas, etc.. Les denuncie. Asi que si necesitais informacion no vacilar en contactarme por e mail. Venganza!!!

Como muchos de vosotros formo parte de los estafados.
Realice un par de traducciones, a parte de pagar a una tarifa muy baja…al final no pagan!!!!!!
Y hoy, hable con un supuesto contable que me dijo que podia denunciar pero que tambien veria loq ue podia pasarme!!!! Alucino!
Nos podemos juntar para evitar que vuelva a ocurrir esto.

Tim, espero que no tinguis cap mena de problema amb aquesta publicació, perquè segur que servirà de gran ajuda a molta gent. Quan estava a tercer de carrera, i després d’haver enviat diversos currículums, em va arribar una feineta d’una agència (no era aquesta, però el fet és el mateix). En aquell moment, no sabia ni com anava tot el tema de fiscalitat però vaig fer la factura sense donar-me d’alta enlloc. En cap moment no em van posar cap problema. Vaig estar deixant-m’hi la pell durant una setmana, la prèvia als exàmens, amb els nervis que va suposar tot plegat. La feina ascendia a uns 500 euros. No vaig aconseguir que em paguessin i em vaig veure indefensa perquè, en ser una factura il·legal no vaig tenir valor de denunciar-ho enlloc. Afortunadament, no m’he tornat a trobar en cap cas semblant en els anys que fa que estic treballant, però espero que aquestes informacions serveixin per a la gent que comença.

Hola Tim! Que sàpigues que tots estem amb tu i que farem el que faci falta… hauríem de poder parar-los els peus d’alguna manera o altra, que ja està bé el que estan fent!
No sé si ets d’alguna associació de traductors, potser et podrien ajudar amb l’assessorament legal i per saber què hauries de fer i què no.
De totes maneres, no t’hi facis mala sang, que és fàcil de veure que fins i tot amb això els manca professionalitat i que fan les coses tan malament com saben.
No t’hi capfiquis, passa un bon Nadal i mira de pensar-hi el mínim possible.

si ho arribo a saber, t’hauria avisat que són gent de la pitjor estofa. Jo hi vaig treballar i, amb altra gent, ens volien estafar. Sempre juguen al marge de la legalitat i fins més enllà. I si no et queixes, reclames o els persegueixes es fan l’orni. És qüestió de ser més perseverants que ells. A tots aquells que us deuen diners, jo em presentaria en grup a les seva oficina del carrer Aribau amb els papers dels diners que us deuen i no m’hi mouria fins que no em pagués. Hola a todos. No he podido leer todos los mensajes pero creo que sería bueno que os advirtiera que hay por ahí otra “empresa fantasma” que solicita traducciones y no las abona. Yo recibí un e-mail de graficastarraco@hotmail.com de una tal Ana Torres. Me solicitó unas traducciones a euskera y de momento me están poniendo un montón de pegas para pagar, que si no tienen el nº de cuenta correcto, que si mi banco les cobra comisión…en fin QUERIA ADVERTIROS POR SI OS LLEGA ALGO.Resulta además que me solicitó que pasara la factura a nombre de una persona+DNI que no tiene nada que ver (en teoría) con ella, o sea, que además está suplantando o utilizando identidades de otras personas, cosa que todavía creo que es más delito.Un saludo a tots.

Hola Anboto, a mi me ha escrito tambien esa direccion con el nombre de Manuel Manuel y a mi compañera de piso con el nombre de Ana Torres. mi pregunta es la de saber si es verdad que son unos estafadores y no pagan las traduciones que encargan. tanto a ella como a mi nos dan unos datos de una empresa que solo cambia el principio del nombre. Hola a todos los afectados por la estafa de graficastarraco@hotmail.com.
Nos hemos puesto en contacto con BEL Portugal y ellos no tienen constancia ninguna de estar trabajando con una empresa de traducciones española. Lo que debemos hacer es ponernos en contacto todos y juntarnos para ir contra esos cabrones.A mi me deben 650€ y a mi compañera 370€. No es una cantidad alta, pero suponiendo que por su culpa tuve que dejar un trabajo, sabiendo como está la situacion laboral hoy en dia, y que estamos empezando en esto de las traduciones, el daño es mayor.

Buenas a todos
Soy una de las afectadas de graficastarraco@hotmail.com,y me pongo en contacto con los todos para que podamos emitir una denuncia conjunta.
Les envie mi traducción de francés a portugués junto con otros documentos,que por ser poca cantidad les comente que no se los cobraría, encima de ser buena y depositar todas mis ilusiones en la traducción,ya que llevo poco tiempo en este mundillo,no me respondieron hasta una semana más tarde,diciendome que tenía que darle el visto bueno el cliente,pues bien,les escribo cada día para que me devuelvan el dinero y o me dicen que no han podido responderme por enfermedad o que aún no saben si el cliente aceptó.
Me deben un total de 400 euros,y les he amenazado diciendo que les escribiría cada día reclamando mi dinero.
Podríamos hacer algo si nos unimos,porque estos tios se reiran una y mas veces de los freelancer si no los paramos.

Hola, he leído los comentarios acerca de GRAFICASTARRACO y yo también soy una de las afectadas,prometieron pagarme al finalizar la traducción de todos los documentos (inglés-portugués-francés) me deben más de2000 euros.La situación es dificil porque actúan en masa,es una empresa que hoy está en Madrid,los denuncias,la policia va a por ellos y encuentran la oficina vacía,luego se instalan en otra ciudad y así continuamente,usan identidad falsa y blanquean dinero al poner la identidad de otra persona a la hora de “abonar” las traducciones. El único soporte que posee un freelancer es fiarse de la buena voluntad de las personas,pero está claro que gente de todo tipo hay por todo el mundo.

Aquí otro de los timados por MTM, por allá en el año 2001 (a mí me deben pesetas, y no euros). Lo mejor es tomárselo con filosofía… en su momento me cabreé muchísimo, bueno, muchísimo más que eso, porque nos pillaron a mí y a mi mujer. Presentamos sendos monitorios, el juez nos dió la razón, pero como es un timador profesional, nunca le encontraron nada para quitarle.
Yo ya tiré la toalla hace tiempo (la justicia desgasta la moral y el bolsillo) pero mi mujer está segura de ir a por él hasta el final. De hecho, hoy mismo ha pasado por los juzgados para empezar un proceso penal contra la persona física (y ya dejando atrás esa red de empresas falsas que sólo sirven para marear la perdiz). Veo que muchos hemos pagado la pardillada de ese impresentable…

Y ya vamos una más. En mi caso, me encargaron unas traducciones de español a euskara por un importe de 550 euros aproximadamente. Conmigo contactó Ana Torres con la dirección graficastarraco@hotmail.com y para la factura me dieron un nombre y DNI que supongo que serán falsos. Yo estoy dispuesta a llegar hasta el final, no me da la gana que gentuza como MTM/Maremagnum en Barcelona gane dinero arruinándonos a nosotros. Propongo crear un grupo y y comenzar los trámites legales, ya que entre todos es factible económicamente.

me too.i was contacted by a guy calling himself fernando fuste who told me he was organising english classes for someone else.i thought he was a secretary or personal assistant but when i arrived at the students house,he didn´t know who fernando was.he had paid one month of classes in advance to fernando and i was to invoice fernando at the end of the month.but that was a month ago and i´m still waiting for my money.when i call fernando he pretends he doesn´t have mobile coverage then the phone goes dead.and now i´m reading about so many other people´s experiences with him.my invoice is not huge but its 17 hours work just so some toe-rag can finance his thieving lifestyle.i´m angry and would love to meet him in person if you know what i mean.can we all do anything about this as a group?

Yo también tengo problemas con ellos, me contrataron como fija y aún me deben dinero. Os puedo confirmar que “Ana Torres” no existe, en realidad se llama Núria y es la esposa de Joan Fernando Valls Fuste. He pasado unos meses en la empresa por lo que quizas os puedo ayudar si tenéis preguntas, o si le ponéis una demanda, estaré encantada de testificar si lo que sé es relevante. Por ejemplo, si me deciéis que tipo de traducción habéis realizado/ su contenido a lo mejor puedo identificar el nombre del cliente y de ahí se pueden obtener pruebas sin necesidad de basarse en facturas falsas etc. No os prometo nada, pero al menos intentaré ayudar… Venganza!!!
Unas infos mas: la oficina de MADRD ya hace tiempo que NO EXISTE, tienen un despacho en Tarragona (de ahí la inspiración del nombre graficastarraco supongo) donde solo estan los viernes y una en la Gran Via 608, 5B en Barcelona. Si queréis localizar a Joan Valls, tendréis que esperar en la puerta del edificio ya que fingirá no estar si os presentais directamente en el despacho.

Estoy desesperada,la factura era de 532euros,pero lo peor es que he tenido que rechazar otra traducción de una cantidad inferior para realizar esta.Alguien puede ayudarme??

Hola Sarita,
Cuanto tiempo hace que la enviaste? Si hace poco, y si es la primera que haceis para ellos, por ahora no te asustes, en general pagan la primera traducción para que el traductor les tenga confianza. Luego envian mas trabajos y es entonces que empiezan los trabajos. Si ves que te ponen excusas para pagar, lo mejor es empezar a reunir todas las pruebas que tengas de la relación laboral para una posible denuncia. Si pasa eso, escribeme otra vez, tengo un amigo que es abogado y que me esta ayudando, seguramente te podria dar unos consejos…
Me puedes decir por favor, que dirección e-mail utiliza Ana Torres?
Además, acabo de recibir un e-mail de traduccionesliterarias.com y aunque no puedo estar segura claro, me temo que es otra “empresa fantasma” de ellos…

Buenas tardes, como ya habrán visto anteriormente un poco más arriba, soy uno de los afectados por la estafa de gráficas tarraco.
Investigando y mirando por internet he descubierto que los sinvergüenzas que se están forrando a costa de nuestro trabajo tiene una página web propia:

Ahí pueden ver que, como dijo nuestra compañera Isabel, tienen sede en Madrid, Barcelon y Tarragona.
Aquí pueden ver como se las gastan.
Ofrecen unos servicios en muchos idiomas, que luegos nos encargan a los pobres freelance, que como no es un dinero declarado, pueden aprovecharse de nosotros y estafarnos.
Entre todos, propongo enviar mails y poner anuncios por todos sitios para que se haga pública la estafa.
Es la unica manera de poder parar esto y que todo el mundo sepa a que se atienen antes de que les hagan sus encargos, ya que nosotros, visto lo visto, como no vamos a ver nuestro dinero, por lo menos, evitamos que se sigan forrando a nuestra costa.
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡TODOS UNIDOS PODEMOS LUCHAR PARA QUE SE LES ACABE EL CHOLLO!!!!!!!!!

Alguno conoce una buena asociacion?
En esta profesion tendriamos que estar mas unidos. fijaos en otras profesiones, como los abogados… ellos si que estan unidos, y no son mas que nosostros.

Confirmo: traduccionesliterarias.com es otra “empresa fantasma” de ellos. De momento no os puedo decir nada mas porque estoy preparando una sorpresa para ellos.

Hola Otra Mas! Yo tambien acabo de ser estafada por traduccionesliterarias de Barcelona, son solo 100 euros pero yo vivo en Italia y para mi es un poco complicado hacer algo en concreto. Hola, acabo de descubrir que Traduccionesliterias es parte de Maremagnum, ya que el movil es lo mismo!!!! Yo vivo en Italia, pero haria lo que sea para el dinero que me deben!!! Si vais a hacer una denuncia o algo asì, por favor, me gustaria participar. Gracias!

Ultimo comentario: ya que la direccion de ese grupo parece ser, en el directorio de empresas, Gran Via 308 5B (por cierto, a mi me dijeron Viladomat bajos…), por que no nos quedamos en esperarles allì en la puerta o concordar una cita bajo la falsa identidad de cliente con la excusa de ofrecer a la agencia un trabajo de traduccion que hacer o algo parecido?????Que os parece????

graficastarraco@hotmail.com Otra estafa más, y ahora a mi compañero en euskera y por una cantidad de 680euros,son cantidades pequeñas y esto les beneficia porque así nadie puede denunciar,ya que los costes de abogados superarian con creces la cantidad ganada.Ya podemos estar aquí quejándonos si al final ellos se ríen porque saben que como Free Lancer tenemos todas las de perder, es una pena:-(

Esto llega al colmo!!! Ahora también timan a los clientes!!! Llevo esperando una traducción 7 días desde el plazo de entrega… Hicimos el pago para que la enviarán y ahora ni reembolso ni traducción!! VAMOS A DENUNCIAR!!!

Un hombre me contacto con el nombre Jose Luis Coll que trabaja por Caritas Espana.. Despues de leer todos los blogs y sitios, veo que es un estafador y que de verdad es el gran hijo… Juan Fernando Valls Fusté. Alguien sabe concretamente COMO sabe la gente que es el?? Es que para denunciarle hace falta esa informacion.
